A place on VCU's campus that contributes to university placemaking in my experience is the terraced lawn area outside Cabell Library and Hibbs Hall, though I'm not sure if it has a formal name for the space:
This area on Monroe Park Campus supports placemaking since it promotes and supports community gathering: it is central to many of VCU's buildings (and the library), there are multiple areas to sit (benches, tables & chairs, and stepped lawn and concrete), and the spaciousness of the features allow several groups of people (or individuals) to use the space simultaneously. The environment is attractive thanks to the brickwork and the trees and plants nearby which flower in the spring. The area functions well for a variety of uses, showing its human centric design -- reading, napping (lying down on some grass is very comfy!), eating a snack or meal, having a group study session, or just zoning out and looking at something other than a screen in between classes.
